Using the 1971 country of birth data

We have seen that we can only get 'true' ethnicity for those LS members who were present in 1991. For the rest, we can try to determine their ethnicity from the 1971 census data on their country of birth, and that of their parents. This has been done already in the form of the derived variable ETHOR7. This variable classifies LS members into broad ethnic groups based on country of birth and parents' country of birth. A further classification was possible by the analysis of LS members' surnames. (This was done within ONS; as a user of the LS you will have no access to members' surnames.)

Surname analysis was only useful for distinguishing certain population subgroups; try the question below to see if you can determine which subgroups.
