LS variable metadata
Variable: SEXSPWI
Table: WDOW
Short description: Sex of LS member (where discrepant).
Full description:
Coding notes: 1= Male
2= Female
Notes: If SEXAWI (Sex of deceased spouse of LS member) = 1 then SEXSPWI (sex of LS member) = 2 If SEXAWI (Sex of deceased spouse of LS member) = 2 then SEXSPWI (sex of LS member) = 1
Units of measurement:
Source: Applies in the event of the sex of the deceased spouse of LS member matching the sex of LS member as held on core record 11. The sex discrepancy field on LS member record 11 is calculated differently from other events. The widow(er)hood record only carries the sex of the deceased (SEXAWI) as it is assumed that the sex of the spouse (i.e. LS member) is the opposite to that of the deceased spouse. To carry out the check, the sex of the deceased is checked against the sex of the LS member contained on the core record. If they are the same then SEXD001= 57 is added to the core record. It should be remembered that the sex of the LS member may not necessarily be in error but that the widow(er)hood record may be suspect.
