|Full name:||Country of Birth 1981|
|General description:||Classification of country of birth in the census used the Commonwealth as the schema for classification of countries outside the United Kingdom until 2001. This is the form used in standard Census tables.|
In 1981, the New Commonwealth did not formally include Pakistan, which was classified, as ‘Foreign: Asia’ although Pakistan is grouped with the New Commonwealth in Census tables as ‘New Commonwealth and Pakistan’.
In addition the way in which the United Kingdom is classified varies with the censuses. In 1981, the United Kingdom included England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Channel Islands and Isle of Man though formally not part of the UK were sometimes included with the UK in Census tables.
European countries were categorised according to whether or not they were part of the European Community in 1981.
