Abstract

McDowall M, Goldblatt P, Fox J. Employment during pregnancy and infant mortality. Population Trends 1981; 26: 12-15.

In a parliamentary question in October 1979 the Secretary of State for Social Services was asked whether there was any evidence that employment of women during pregnancy was related to the survival chances of their children. At the time, there was no source of data which could be used to answer the question. Here data recently available in the OPCS Longitudinal Study are used to provide a preliminary assessment. The question is not as simple to answer as it might seem at first sight.
